ESSENTIAL CARE GUIDE
Protecting Softness, Shape, And Longevity
Wool garments don’t need frequent washing due to the natural lanolin oils in the fibers, which make wool antimicrobial and odor-resistant. Instead of washing after every wear, air your sweaters out to refresh them. Generally, washing once per season is sufficient unless there are visible stains or odors.
Dry cleaning solvents can break down wool fibers over time, making them brittle. Hand washing or using a gentle machine cycle is the safest way to clean wool.
Hand washing is the best method to clean wool while preserving its softness and shape.
What You’ll Need:
- A sink or basin
- Lukewarm water (not hot)
- A mild wool-safe detergent or an alternative (baby shampoo or pH-balanced sulfate-free shampoo)
- A clean towel
Steps:
- Measure Before Washing: Lay your sweater flat and take key measurements—length from neck to hem and sleeve length—so you can reshape it accurately after washing.
- Prepare the Wash: Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add 1 tablespoon of gentle detergent. Swirl to mix.
- Submerge the Sweater: Turn the sweater inside out and gently press it into the water. Let it soak for 10–30 minutes.
- Spot Clean If Needed: If there are stains on cuffs or other areas, gently rub with your fingers.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Fill a separate basin with water at the same temperature and rinse until no suds remain.
- Remove Excess Water: Gently squeeze (do not wring) the sweater to remove water. Roll it in a clean towel and press to absorb moisture.
Drying wool incorrectly can lead to misshaping. Follow these steps for best results:
- Remove Excess Water: After washing, roll the sweater in a clean towel to absorb moisture.
- Lay Flat to Dry: Place the sweater on a drying rack or a flat towel, reshaping it to its original measurements.
- Avoid Heat & Sunlight: Do not place wool near radiators, heaters, or in direct sunlight, as this can cause shrinkage or fading.
- Do Not Hang to Dry: Hanging can stretch the sweater and distort its shape.
Once the sweater is damp but not wet, check its measurements. Gently stretch or reshape as needed before leaving it to dry completely. Once dry, you can wear the sweater briefly to ensure it has retained its proper fit.
To maintain the quality and longevity of your woolen garments, proper washing and drying techniques are essential.
- Always use cold or room-temperature water when washing, as hot water can cause shrinkage and damage the delicate fibers.
- Avoid wringing woolens when drying, as this can stretch and distort their shape. Instead, gently press out excess water using a towel.
- Never dry woolen garments under direct sunlight or hang them while wet, as this can lead to uneven stretching and fading. Instead, lay them flat on a clean, dry towel in a shaded, well-ventilated area.
- To Do: Use mild, wool-safe detergents and handle woolens with care. Not to Do: Do not use harsh chemicals, fabric softeners, or a dryer, as they can weaken the fibers and cause felting.
- Following these guidelines will keep your woolens soft, durable, and in their best condition for years to come.
